Katharagama Perahera

Katharagama Dewalaya is a significant religious site in Sri Lanka that is known for its historical and cultural importance. It is a popular destination among both local and foreign tourists, and attracts thousands of visitors every year. In this article, we'll explore the history of Katharagama Dewalaya, its significance, and the festivals and celebrations that take place there.

History of Katharagama Dewalaya

Katharagama Dewalaya is believed to have been established over 2,500 years ago by King Dutugemunu. It is said that he built the temple to honor the Hindu god Skanda, who is also known as Katharagama Deviyo. The temple complex has since been expanded and renovated by various kings and rulers throughout Sri Lanka's history, making it a truly unique site that blends elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, and indigenous beliefs.

Significance of Katharagama Dewalaya

Katharagama Dewalaya is an important site of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is believed that visiting the temple and offering prayers to the gods can bring good fortune, prosperity, and protection. The temple is also known for its healing powers, and many people come here seeking relief from physical and mental ailments.

Festivals and Celebrations at Katharagama Dewalaya

The most famous festival that takes place at Katharagama Dewalaya is the Esala Perahera, which is held every year in July or August. During this festival, the temple comes alive with dancers, drummers, and elephants decorated in colorful costumes. The procession lasts for several days and is a sight to behold.

The Kataragama festival is renowned for its fire-walking ceremonies that are held in the main temple yard after the procession. The organizers prepare the area beforehand by burning wood, and the devotees who wish to take part in the fire-walking ceremony visit the main temple (maha devale) to receive divine blessings and cleanse themselves. They then proceed to tread the red-hot embers that are carefully laid out on the ground to show their great reverence to the god.

The festival comes to an official end with the water-cutting ceremony, which takes place in the Menik Ganga on the morning after the final procession on the full moon night. During the final rite, known as Diya Kapeema, the Kapurala, who is an official of the temple, cuts the water of the river with a sword to ceremonially end the annual festival. After the ceremony, the devotees take a dip in the shallow waters of Manik Ganga for purification before departing to resume their everyday lives.

How to get to Katharagama Dewalaya

Katharagama Dewalaya is located in the southern part of Sri Lanka. Kataragama is about 228 km from Colombo city. From there, you can take a taxi or hire a car to drive to the temple.

Conclusion

Katharagama Dewalaya is a unique and fascinating site that is well worth a visit. Whether you're a devout pilgrim or simply curious about Sri Lankan culture and history, this temple complex has something to offer everyone. With its rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant festivals, Katharagama Dewalaya is a true gem of Sri Lanka.
